Liberia, South Carolina:

An African American Appalachian Community

A lecture by Dr. John M. Coggeshall, Professor of Anthropology, Clemson University.

This talk presents the oral history of an African-American community in upper Pickens and Greenville counties.  Descendants of local freed slaves, the Liberia Community has struggled for over a century to persevere in White-dominated Upstate South Carolina.  The community’s struggles also reflect larger theoretical and historical issues.  Audience questions are welcomed.

Free and open to the public.
