The Tonda Puppet Troupe, founded in the 1830s, is one of the most active groups performing traditional ningyō jōruri or Bunraku puppetry in Japan, and has been officially designated “Living National Treasures” under Japan’s program for preserving its culture. Even in Japan, Bunraku is a relatively unusual form of theater, for which people travel great distances to see.

The ningyo puppets are meticulously crafted pieces of art approximately one-half or two-thirds life-size. Three puppeteers must all become one with the doll in order to manipulate it, and they must work together with the chanter and the shamisen player. It is this striking co-ordination that renders Bunraku so outstanding as the magnificent puppets seem to come alive.

Based in the northern part of the city of Nagahama on the shore of Lake Biwa, in Shiga Prefecture, the Tonda Puppets have made international performance tours to Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The Troupe performs regularly at its own theatre in Nagahama and on tour within Japan. The Tonda Puppet Troupe also instructs students in Bunraku puppetry and hosts training sessions for local citizens interested in pursuing the art of the traditional puppet theatre.

As part of Upstate International Month there are 5 performances in the Upstate that are free and open to the public.

“Salsa under the Stars” Summer Series Begins with a Bang in Downtown Greenville

[Greenville, SC]—June 29, 2015— Salsa under the Stars: The Hottest Summer Night in SC spiced up downtown Greenville Saturday, June 27th. Over 300 people attended the event, which celebrated Latin culture through music and dance. The Peace Center donated space in Graham Plaza on the corner of Main and Broad Streets. A partnership between the International Center of the Upstate and Pura Alegría Dance Company, Salsa under the Stars featured a live band, free dance lesson, cash bar, and raffle for prizes.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the support for this first event,” says Rebecca Ragland, one of the organizers. “It’s wonderful to see so many people in our community enjoying music and dance together. We had people there who grew up with salsa music and have danced their wholes lives, and we had people there who were introduced to salsa. It’s great to have such a diverse crowd. Music is a wonderful way to bring people together.”

The Marcel Portilla Band led the event with great energy and enthusiasm, playing a variety of Latin music, including popular salsa songs and original compositions. The Marcel Portilla Band is led by Marcel Portilla, a highly regarded South American singer/songwriter. Originally from Cali, Colombia, Portilla’s goal is to use his music to spread a message of diversity, love, and peace. The band plays a fusion of New Latin, Tropical, Pop, Rock, Blues, and Reggae.
Pura Alegría Dance Company led a complimentary beginners’ salsa class at the start of the event. The plaza was full of people learning to dance the basic salsa steps, which set the tone for a casual evening of fun, music, and dance.

The first in a three-part summer series, Salsa under the Stars: The Hottest Summer Night in SC will continue July 25 and August 29, from 6:30pm to 10pm in Graham Plaza in front of the Peace Center on the corner of Main and Broad Streets. For more information, please contact Christine Hofbauer at 864-631-2188 or Rebecca Ragland at 864-382-0417. Join the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/692467677526439/.
