THE RUSSIAN SORCERER & HIS APPRENTICE (UI Member Discount)
Jan 26 @ 3:00 pm
Master composer and “Russian Sorcerer” Mikhail Glinka casts a musical spell with his hypnotic Overture to Ruslan & Ludmila.  This his “apprentices” display all they learned: be thrilled by the fiery and exotic fantasies of Stravinsky with his Firebird Suite; Borodin pulls out all the stops with his mighty and wild “Heroic Symphony” and exuberant Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor; and Rimsky-Korsakov delivers an array of dazzling orchestral colors with Capriccio espagnol.
This concert will feature a multimedia presentation of works created by students from the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Visual Arts Department in collaboration with the Greenville Center for Creative Arts.

Edvard Tchivzhel, Conductor

Glinka: Overture to Ruslan & Ludmila
Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio espagnol
Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite
Borodin: Symphony No. 2 (“Heroic Symphony”)

Understanding Bitcoin and Why Blockchain Technology will be as Transformative as the Internet.
Feb 6 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

—————————————————————–

What is bitcoin and blockchain technology?
How did it originate? What is the global impact?
Learn everything you need to know to prepare for the next
big technological advancement.  Lunch is included.
—————————————————————

Join the World Affairs Council Upstate and our co-hosts, the European American Chamber of Commerce-Carolinas and Upstate Alliance as we welcome Sheri Kaiserman, co-founder of Maco.la, a blockchain focused equity investment fund and advisory/HR services firm.  Sheri is an accomplished finance professional with over 30 years of Wall Street experience. After beginning her career at Oppenheimer and spending 10 years as an equity research salesperson, she went to Wedbush Securities and built and ran their equities business for 16 years.  Under Sheri’s leadership, Wedbush was the first Wall Street firm to begin publishing research on private companies (2010), and then was the first to publish research on the topic of bitcoin and blockchain (December 2013).
Sheri left Wall Street early in 2018 to co-found Maco.la and enjoys sharing her knowledge about what blockchain technology can do for business and society.
——————————————————————————————

null“I feel so fortunate to have gotten involved in the blockchain space as early as I did and I love helping educate others on the topic. We are still so early in this technological evolution and it has been immensely rewarding giving others the opportunity to experience the same excitement I get every day.

2nd Annual Greenville Jewish Film Festival
Feb 20 @ 6:00 pm
The Greenville Jewish Film Festival
Celebrating art in more ways than one.
The GJFF is devoted to exploring Jewish arts and culture in more ways than just film. It’s why in addition to the incredible film screenings, happy hours and intermissions we’re serving up this year, the GJFF has partnered with talented local muralist, Adam Schrimmer, who will be creating an interactive experience for our guests. The artwork concepts will consist of themed paintings about the movies that are being screened. Adam will draw the image ahead of time in black and then during the event, Adam will guide the guests to take part in a paint by numbers experience.  Each event evening, a 4’ x 8’ panel will be completed by our guests that represents the movie being shown. The panels will then be donated as “traveling artwork” to businesses in the Greenville community in order to bring awareness to the GJFF.
We look forward to everyone’s participation in the symbolic and artistic endeavor!

Our selection of movies allows for an opportunity to think critically and feel powerfully.

The Island of the Sea Women by Lisa See.
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends that come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous physical work, and the men take care of the children.
