This session on African American literature will focus on nonfiction works by James Baldwin (“My Dungeon Shook: Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation,” 1963), Ta-Nehisi Coates (excerpts from Between the World and Me, 2015), and Ariel Felton (“A Letter to My Niece,” 2019). Each of these works is written as a letter from the author to a younger family member.
