Senior Director, McLarty Associates; Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia (2006–09; 2014–16)

Ambassador Blake served for 31 years in the State Department in a wide range of leadership positions. From 2013-2016, he served as the US Ambassador to Indonesia, where he focused on building stronger business and educational ties between the US and Indonesia, while also developing cooperation to help Indonesia reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  In 2009, he was nominated by President Obama to be Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, serving from 2009-2013, for which he was awarded the State Department’s Distinguished Service Award. From 2006-2009, he served concurrently as US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in India from 2003-2006, where he was named the worldwide DCM of the Year by the State Department.

He is currently Chairman of the Board of the US-Indonesia Society, and he is a member of the board of the Asia Foundation and the Bhutan Foundation.

Jennifer started her career in Human Resources shortly after graduating from Clemson University with a BS in Marketing. After spending two years in sales and figuring out her passion was elsewhere, she accepted a role in recruiting with an international search firm. Immediately drawn to employment law issues, Jennifer spent the next few years helping companies of all sizes find needed talent in finance, accounting and administrative positions. Her recruitment experience led her to a manufacturer in the Northeast as a Human Resources Generalist supporting union and non-union employees across the US. After relocating back home in 2001, she joined Canal Insurance Company and spent the next 13 years. In her role as VP, Human Resources, Jennifer oversaw all aspects of HR including talent acquisition, total rewards, employee benefits, organizational development and employee relations as well as serving as a member of Canal’s Executive team and working with their Board of Directors. She has also served as HR Director at ScanSource, Inc., and as VP, HR for MidCountry Financial Corp., a consumer finance and banking institution. Her specialties are strategic and business planning, corporate/business coaching, benefit plan management, talent management, organizational development, compliance and investigative work. Jennifer received her RCCTM (Registered Corporate Coach) certification in 2020 and has operated as owner and President of HR Experts on Demand, a full-service HR Consulting firm since 2017.

Director Atlantic Council; US Ambassador to Ukraine and Uzbekistan (2003–06; 2000–03)

Ambassador John E. Herbst is senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center and served for thirty-one years as a foreign service officer in the US Department of State, retiring at the rank of career minister. He was US ambassador to Ukraine from 2003 to 2006, when he worked to enhance US-Ukrainian relations, help ensure the conduct of a fair Ukrainian presidential election, and prevent violence during the Orange Revolution. Prior to that, he was ambassador to Uzbekistan (2000-03), where he played a critical role in the establishment of an American base to help conduct Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He also promoted improved US-Uzbek relations, in part by encouraging the government in Tashkent to improve its human rights record.

In his last four years at the State Department, he served as the coordinator for reconstruction and stabilization, leading the US government’s civilian capacity in societies in transition from conflict or civil strife, and to provide support to countries at risk of instability. He oversaw the establishment of the Civilian Response Corps of the United States, the US civilian rapid response force for reconstruction and stabilization operations overseas.

Ambassador Herbst previously served as US consul general in Jerusalem; principal deputy to the Ambassador-at-Large for the Newly Independent States; the director of the office of independent states and commonwealth affairs; director of regional affairs in the Near East Bureau; and at the embassies in Tel Aviv, Moscow, and Saudi Arabia.

He most recently served as director of the center for complex operations at National Defense University. He has received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the Secretary of State’s Career Achievement Award, and the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award. Ambassador Herbst has written book chapters, articles, and op-eds on stability operations in Central Asia, Ukraine, and Russia. His writings have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, the National Interest, and Foreign Policy. He has been a frequent guest discussing the Ukraine crisis on television and radio.
Ambassador Herbst earned a bachelor of science in foreign service from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Phi Beta Kappa, and a master of law and diplomacy, with distinction, from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. He also attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies Bologna Center.

Ambassador (ret) W. Robert Pearson, of Tennessee, is a Fellow at Duke University’s Center for International and Global Studies Rethinking Diplomacy Program, a non-resident Scholar at The Middle East Institute in Washington, President of American Publishers Inc., a digital journal on American foreign policy published in cooperation with the University of North Carolina, and a partner at Spectrum Group, a Washington consulting firm. He is a local leader for the Equal Justice Initiative in North Carolina.

He is a frequent speaker on American diplomacy and foreign affairs,Turkey and its place in the world, the Middle East, and international development. He has published numerous articles and opinion pieces and has appeared on BBC, CNBC, MSNBC, NPR, Voice of America, Al-Jazeera, I24 TV, and TNT Global among other networks.

He served from 2008 to 2014 as president of IREX, an international development NGO based in Washington focused on education, civil society development and independent media, spearheading its expansion to 125 countries worldwide.

His last assignment on active duty was as Director General of the Foreign Service winning two national awards for the Department of State. He was the United States Ambassador to Turkey in Ankara from 2000 to 2003. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission to France and served twice at NATO – once as Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.S. Mission during the Balkan crisis and NATO’s enlargement – and once as chair of NATO’s Political Committee. He was the Executive Secretary of the Department of State under Secretary James Baker and Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Security Council. He served in Beijing, China as a political officer and began his Foreign Service career with a 2-year assignment in Auckland, New Zealand in 1976.

He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (B.A) and the University of Virginia Law School (LLB), where he was Editor in Chief of the Virginia Journal of International Law. He speaks French, Chinese and Turkish.

Writer, Retired editor of TIME Magazine, Lecturer of the Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University

In the first 15 years of her career, Ann Morrison rose from fact-checker to executive editor of FORTUNE magazine, a Time Inc. magazine. In 1994, the company named her chief editorial executive of its Asiaweek magazine in Hong Kong, where she remained until 2000. That year Time Inc. transferred her to London, where she became co-editor (with her husband Donald Morrison) of the European edition of TIME. In 2008 and 2009, she was a lecturer in the Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. In 2011 and 2012, she taught media management at Sciences-Po in Paris, in addition to freelancing for various publications. She now serves on the Advisory Committee of the American Library in Paris and continues to freelance as a writer and an editor on subjects ranging from French beauty secrets to Chinese culture. A graduate of the College of New Rochelle, she holds graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the London School of Economics.

Donald Morrison is an author, journalist and educator. In a long career at TIME magazine, he served as editor of its World section in New York, its Asian edition in Hong Kong and its European edition in London. He has taught at New York University’s London Center, Tsinghua University in Beijing and the Institut d’etudes politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris.

Mr. Morrison is the author, co-author or editor of books on subjects as diverse as Chinese democracy, the Obama presidency and photojournalism. His “The Death of French Culture,” a 2009 French best-seller, was published in the U.S. and the U.K. in 2010. He is currently Europe Editor of the London-based magazine PORT, as well as a columnist and advisory board member at The Berkshire Eagle. His weekly podcast commentary is featured on NPR’s Robin Hood Radio, Podcasts.com and other news outlets. He has written for The New York Times, The Financial Times, Le Monde, Le Point, The New Republic, Smithsonian and Quartz. Mr. Morrison holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the London School of Economics. He is married to Ann Morrison, former Executive Editor of Fortune magazine and Editor of Asiaweek.

Paul Berg, a distinguished member of the U.S. Foreign Service since 1983, served in important positions in Vietnam, Italy, Mexico, Colombia, New Guinea, Belgium, Afghanistan and Washington DC. He is excited to share his insights as a newly retired Foreign Service officer

Paul Berg, a member of the U.S. Foreign Service since 1983, most recently served overseas as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Rome; prior to that, he was Senior Civilian Representative at the Regional Platform Southwest at Camp Leatherneck, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was promoted into the Senior Foreign Service (SFS) Fall 2011, following a tour as Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, also accredited to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. From 2007 to April 2009, he was Deputy Director of the Western Hemisphere Bureau’s Office of Policy, Planning and Regional Coordination. From 2003-2006, he was Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate General in Medan, which he reopened. During his three years there, he was the U.S. government’s point man on the insurgency in Aceh and oversaw USG response to the December 2004 Aceh tsunami and March 2005 Nias earthquake. In March 2007, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice issued him a Distinguished Honor Award for his achievements there. He has also received four individual Superior Honor Awards.

Prior to his service in Indonesia, Mr. Berg served as Plan Colombia Director at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia 2001-2002. He was Deputy Chief of the Political Section at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam 1998-2001. Before that, he oversaw law enforcement and political-military affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City 1994-1997. He has also served in Rome, Brussels, Bombay and Washington, DC. Mr. Berg’s languages are French, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia and Pashto.

Mr. Berg is a 2007 graduate of the National War College in Fort McNair, Washington DC, with a Masters in Strategic Studies. He has Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in the City of New York. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, he was Acting Executive Director of International House in New York City, and before that was a local politician in Wisconsin

Bill Clifford is President and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America in Washington, DC, where he leads WACA’s national office and represents its nonpartisan nonprofit network of more than 90 World Affairs Councils across the United States. In March 2017, he was appointed nonresident senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Before joining WACA in September 2013, Bill spearheaded the revitalization and growth of WorldBoston, a WACA member Council known for innovative programming, access to leaders, and a tradition of advancing public learning about critical international issues. Previously, Bill served as Asia bureau chief for the pioneering multimedia venture CBS MarketWatch, where he launched and directed news bureaus in Japan and Hong Kong. He got his start In broadcast news with Asia Business News TV and was senior correspondent in Tokyo for CNBC Asia after its merger with ABN. Bill began his work in journalism reporting on international economics, finance, and politics for several newspapers.

In 2019, Bill was appointed as a member of the Korea Economic Institute of America’s advisory council. Bill holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins SAIS, a B.A. summa cum laude in international relations and French literature from Tufts University, and a C.E.P from Sciences Po in Paris.

As a successful business executive and entrepreneur, Lohr’s professional career includes COO of a major franchise corporation, Senior Team Leader for Fortune 500 mergers and reorganizations, Advisor to the Dept of State and Senior Military leaders on Civil-Military Transitions and Economic Development initiatives, and Consultant for Private Business ventures and Emerging Market investor groups.

This background gave him broad experience in International Development, Socioeconomic Improvements, and Foreign Affairs in high-profile, complex environments. Most recent work has included spearheading Franchise Initiatives in developing countries and leading teams focused on i) Economic and Operational Transitions, ii) Multinational Engagements and Competency, and iii) Situational Assessments and Resiliency in conflict and post-conflict regions.

He has worked in over 33 countries and various regions, including the Middle East, Africa, Europe, East Asia, South Asia, and North and Central America, and the former Soviet Union. Interconnected issues such as socioeconomic inclusion, trade and investment, and organizational development were significant concerns in these diverse environments.

Working at the ground level with Senior Government leaders, Private Businesses, and NGOs (U.S. and foreign) engagements focused on decision support, conflict management, strategic direction and tactical implementation, and oversight. Results have included building ‘strategic’ relationships and addressing broader issues from a systemic perspective.

As Director for the Commercial Service in South Carolina, Dorette coordinates and leads efforts to develop and executive strategic initiatives in the State. Dorette focuses on developing new markets for small to medium sized companies (SME) and is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with statewide partner organizations and manages the Export Assistant Centers in South Carolina.

Prior to joining the Commercial Service in June 2008 Dorette served as Director of Trade Development and Operations for ECI-Find New Markets. Here she focused on SME sector development and international trade strategy and cluster development for economic development agencies.

Dorette has experience in the European market and has conducted seminars at the invitation of local development agencies and trade associations on marketing, finding new markets and doing business in the United States.

A native of South Africa, Dorette has over fifteen years of consulting experience. Prior to joining ECI –Find New Markets, she served as business analyst and account manager for the Industrial Development Corporation in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has a BSc-Agric and a BSc Agric – Hons. degree from the University of Pretoria, and an MBA from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Chung-Yean Chiang is an assistant professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics (JCBE) at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Dr. Chiang holds a Ph.D. degree in Operations Management from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an MBA degree in Supply Chain Management from Rutgers University.

He was a research associate in the department of automotive study at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, a major think tank in Taiwan. His research interests are supply chain inventory dynamics, user’s acceptance, and inter-organizational collaboration. His research has been published in major premier international journals, such as International Journal of Operations and Production Management and International Journal of Production Economics. Dr. Chiang teaches Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, and Transportation at USC Upstate.

Alison Kosnett

Development and Governance Consultant

Alison Kosnett is an international development expert with over two decades of public and private sector experience in designing, implementing, and managing international development initiatives to support governance and economic renewal in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central/South Asia.

She has worked on the ground in Poland, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan with the U.S. Labor Department, State Department, and USAID, developing an extensive knowledge of public-private partnerships and U.S. Government contracting. She is respected for her cultural adaptability and her commitment to women’s rights and to developing local capacity and empowering local leadership. A graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia with dual degrees in Russian Studies and International Relations, Alison Kosnett has studied Russian in St. Petersburg and Tashkent. She is a recipient of four Department of State Meritorious Honor Awards, the Department of State Expeditionary Service Award, and the USAID Meritorious Honor Award.

Mike Ungar is a FocalPoint Business Coach and Executive Coach helping business leaders improve their profitability and achieve their personal and professional goals.  

After graduating from the United States Military Academy, he served as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army.  Upon completion of his military service, Mike joined Michelin North America.  He started his 35-year career with Michelin as an Industrial Engineer advancing to lead Industrial Engineer teams and several tire manufacturing operations teams.  Mike managed capital investments and then transitioned to help deploy Michelin Manufacturing Way in North America.  

Mike’s Human Resource experience at Michelin includes roles as the North American Director of Corporate Recruiting and University Relations and the Competency Director for the Progress Profession for North and South America.  He also spent nearly two years working at Michelin’s Corporate Headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France deploying Lean to non-manufacturing teams around the world.  While at Michelin, Mike earned his MBA from Clemson University.    

In addition to his work as a FocalPoint Business Coach, Mike is on the Board of the Upstate Veteran’s Business Network and helps Veterans Transitioning to Civilian life.  He is a member of the Workplace Advisory Council to the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding and is co-chair of the Greenville Society of Human Resource Management’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.  He is also a Founder of the Industry 4.0 Club whose purpose is to engage the power of diverse worldwide talent to accelerate the global evolution to Industry 4.0.

Harnessing her professional passion and experience as a Chief Human Resource Officer, Rhonda Gibby partners with CEOs and other business leaders helping them leverage their one true advantage in the marketplace – their talent. 

In response to demands for her expertise, she founded and serves as the principal of Talent Advantage LLC, crafting customer talent solutions that drive competitive advantage. 

Prior to launching Talent Advantage, Rhonda held the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Avanos Medical and, previously, Halyard Health. In both roles, she oversaw global talent management, total rewards initiatives, employee and labor relations, corporate communications, and citizenship. 

Rhonda’s background includes numerous leadership roles in human resources, operations, and sales. After serving as the Vice President – Talent Management, Organizational Effectiveness and Diversity, as well as Vice President – Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness for Kimberly-Clark, she joined Halyard Health in 2014. Before accepting her first CHRO role, Rhonda was Vice President, Global Human Resources and Global Labor Relations where she was responsible for managing human capital strategy and ensuring the robust leadership succession for global business units and labor relations.

Rhonda holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Southern Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in human resource development and business administration from Clemson University.

She has served on non-profit boards, including the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association’s Advisory Group, Children’s Development Academy, and Mission Joint Venture International.

Steve Nail is currently the Dean, College of Business, at Anderson University, where he also teaches Business Law and Strategic HR. He is a labor and employment attorney who began his career with the National Labor Relations Board. Thereafter, he served as Assistant General Counsel for Michelin, including two stints in France, where he worked on the structuring of the European Economic Community and served in the HR and Legal Departments. Later he served as the Vice President of Labor and Employee Relations before moving on to Hubbell where he served as the Vice President of Human Resources. 

In 2020, and again in 2021, Steve was named as one of the 50 most influential people in the Upstate business community. Governor Nikki Haley appointed him to serve on the SC Healthcare Planning Committee and Governor McMaster reappointed him in 2018. Steve was named the 2012 South Carolina HR Professional of the Year by South Carolina SHRM and the SC Chamber of Commerce.  In 2016, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greenville SHRM chapter. He is a frequent speaker, a published author, co-host of the Survive HR podcast, and mentor to many in the HR profession. He often coaches individuals and consults organizations on strategic matters. He is a Registered Corporate Coach, certified by the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches and holds SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications.

Robyn Grable is the Founder and CEO of Veterans ASCEND and Ability ASCEND, which she created to help employers invest in a talent acquisition strategy that is an intentional model of inclusivity for military talent and talented people with disabilities.

Her unwavering commitment to inclusive employment is well-served by her corporate and military experience, including more than 30 years of private sector human resources after nine years of service in the U.S. Navy. Her ongoing study of America’s workforce have made her a leading voice on advocacy, removing barriers and providing connections to successful employment for our underserved talent pools.

In the private sector she focused primarily on workforce management, human capital planning, recruitment, process and procedure evaluation, strategic alignment and relationship management. She created skills assessment programs at blue chip companies McDonald’s Corporation and McGraw-Hill and during her tenure as a Strategic Client Partner at ADP, a leading human capital management firm, Robyn successfully managed and grew the largest client portfolio of Fortune 100 companies.

Robyn enlisted in the United States Navy immediately after high school in 1979, serving for nine years at the height of the Cold War. She received a Meritorious Unit Commendation while deployed to Keflavik, Iceland and the Navy Achievement Medal while stationed at the U.S. Command Center for the Pacific Fleet Pearl Harbor. For dedication to her profession and civilian community service, Robyn was awarded the Navy League Award.

A native of Richmond, Indiana, Robyn holds a master’s in psychology focused on Leadership Coaching. Her capstone project during her graduate studies emphasized coaching military veterans during their transition back to the civilian workforce. Committed to giving back, Robyn has volunteered for American Red Cross, The MS Society, United Way, March of Dimes, Upstate Warrior Solution, IVMF Mentor Program, STRIVE Mentor, Veterans Treatment Court and Vantage Point Foundation. She is a member of SHRM and advises the Workforce Readiness Council of the Greenville SHRM chapter. Robyn also serves on the SCDVA Employment committee and the Workforce Council with the Skilled Trades Alliance. She regularly speaks as a Workforce subject matter expert.

Today she is focused entirely on ensuring veterans, military spouses and people who happen to have a disability are recognized for their skills, valued for their talent and that America’s employers realize the full value of great talent in the workforce to truly ascend.

Grant Burns serves as executive vice president and general counsel of America Fujikura Ltd. – a global fiber optics manufacturer and solutions provider based in Duncan, South Carolina. In this role, Grant oversees all legal matters, as well as human resources, international trade, corporate governance, compliance, and government affairs. In addition, Grant is also involved in the strategic, legal and compliance activities of several other Fujikura group companies in North and South America.

Prior to joining AFL, Grant was in private practice for over twenty years, first with Ogletree Deakins and later with Nexsen Pruet, LLC. During that time, he was recognized for excellence by publications such as The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers and Martindale-Hubbell (AV).

Grant is a graduate of Clemson University and the Washington and Lee University School of Law. 

He is active in several civic and philanthropic organizations across South Carolina in addition to serving by gubernatorial appointment on the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education, which governs the South Carolina Technical College System and administers the state’s readySC™ workforce and economic development program. Prior to joining the ILO, Mr. Cassidy worked for the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF-UK) in London as the Operations, Communications and Partnership Director. His work with the AKF-UK focused on rural and community-based development in Central and South Asia.

Lieutenant General (Ret.) Tom James, Jr., a career Army Officer, retired from active duty in August 2021 after 36 years of active service in leadership positions from platoon through Field Army level. In his last assignment Tom commanded First Army at Rock Island, Illinois where he led over 7,500 Soldiers and Civilians spread across the United States and Territories. Responsible for enabling training, leader development, readiness generation and mobilization capability for the Army National Guard and Reserve: over 530,000 Soldiers representing 52% of the Total Army Force.

He is a 1997 US Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama graduate.

As a Senior National Representative, he is currently directing the Danish Liaison Element as part of the United States Central Command Coalition, whose work includes promoting peace and stability in the Central Command area of responsibility. He also serves as the Coalition Chairman and his leadership and coordination actions on behalf of Denmark contribute directly to international coalition efforts to address destabilizing issues in the Middle East region and around the world.

Henrik Larsen is married to Sanne. Three children (Julie, Catrine and Nikolai) and three grandchildren.

US-China Trade relations have been relatively rocky since the Trump Administration’s international trade policy focused on trade deficits between the two nations. These trade policies have been further expanded on by the Biden Administration as well through additional sanctions and anti-China alliances. This has led to many supplies being unavailable to consumers internationally. In this panel, panelists will discuss: How can nations work diplomatically to prevent barriers for consumers in regards to the supply chain? What actions can nations take internally to assist producers of these products to ensure they are able to meet demands?

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has been an open critic of the mission of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This disdain for NATO was further heightened after the Russian annexation of Crimea. Most recently, Russia has ended diplomatic relations with NATO and in response NATO has withdrawn many of its offices from Russia. Panel lists will discuss: How did this relation between NATO and Russia dissolve? How can it be mended? What actions should these parties take to ensure the security for all involved?

Water scarcity continues to be a growing issue for numerous nations, especially those affected by hot climates. Lack of access to clean drinking water often leads to mass migration, political instability, and famine. With these issues in mind: How can international organizations, through diplomacy, minimize the effects of water scarcity on populations? How can nations work together to solve water scarcity?

China has continued to invest more money into numerous developing nations in Africa. This has led to numerous projects being developed in regards to education and infrastructure. This has led numerous nations, especially the US, to grow weary about Chinese influence in Africa. In this panel, panelists will discuss: Should the US be fearful of Chinese involvement in Africa? How can/Should the US improve its economic leadership in developing nations?

With the massive spread of social media, propaganda and misinformation have run rampant on the Internet. Along with this divisive misinformation, security breaches in formally trusted internet corporations have made millions of users’ information vulnerable for exploitation. This panel will discuss: How can nations address misinformation and ensure meaningful dialogue on the Internet? How can nations diplomatically ensure Internet safety?

The Covid-19 Pandemic led to a major economic crash internationally. This caused numerous businesses to close their doors for good. This has also created major labor shortages due to workers leaving their professions for good towards other opportunities.
