B1: You are currently able to:

Deal with most travel situations in areas where the language is spoken.
Fully understand conversation regarding family, work, school or leisure topics.
Create simple texts on topics of personal interest.
Describe experiences, events, dreams, and ambitions, as well as opinions or plans.

Course will include:

How to communicate effectively in written English for business and personal purposes
The key elements of writing, including paragraph structure, vocabulary development, grammar, and punctuation.
Each week will include targeted in-class instruction, practical exercises, and take-home assignments to reinforce learning.
Students are also encouraged to keep a journal to build consistency and fluency in their writing.

Stimulate your brain by learning a new language or building on your current foreign language skills at Upstate International! Learning a new language is a known way to enhance your ability to multitask, improve memory and communication skills, and upgrade your professional skills. It is also a way to enhance your travel experiences, broaden your global perspective, and open doors to you all around the world – globalization, right? Join UI on this journey!

Regular classes meet once a week for a total of 75 minutes. Intensive classes meet twice a week for a total of 90 minutes. Students MUST BE members of UI in order to take a language class. Classes are online and in-person. Scroll down to see the start and end dates for your class, and location. Fees are NON-REFUNDABLE unless cancelled by UI.

No tests or grades — only lots of learning.

What Classes Are Offered Each Semester?

Class schedules are built semester by semester.
All of our teachers are volunteers and sign up each semester according to their availability.
This means UI staff does not know in advance what languages, levels, or meeting days/times will be offered.
Online registration opens one month before the semester start date.
Students must wait until registration opens to see the available classes.
Even if you call the UI Center or email staff, these details cannot be provided before registration opens.

Class Levels (CEFR + A0)

We follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) plus A0 for complete beginners. You can test your language skills here (note: external website).

A0 – Pre‑Beginner
No prior knowledge. Learn alphabet, sounds, greetings, simple words.

A1 – Beginner
Use simple words/phrases, introduce yourself, ask basic questions.

A2 – Elementary
Handle everyday situations: family, work, shopping, local geography.

B1 – Intermediate
Manage travel, talk about experiences, dreams, plans.

B2 – Upper Intermediate
Speak fluently, discuss complex topics, understand detailed texts.

C1 – Advanced
Express yourself clearly, understand long/difficult texts, use language for work/study.

C2 – Proficient
Near‑native fluency, handle very complex material with ease.

Semester Lengths

Some classes may be shorter. Fees reflect the actual number of weeks. Always check your class listing.

Spring: 15 weeks
Summer: 10 weeks
Fall: 15 weeks

Class Format

Regular classes: once per week, 75 minutes, maximum 10 students
Intensive classes: twice per week, 90 minutes, maximum 6 students

Teachers

All teachers are fluent in the language they teach.
Passionate about sharing their culture.

Materials

Bring pen and paper or a laptop for notes.
Each class listing will specify if additional materials are required.

Registration

Confirmation email sent immediately.
Teacher introduction arrives before class begins.
If registering late (within one week of start), allow up to 72 hours for teacher contact. Register early to save your spot and help confirm the class.

Certificates & Accreditation

Upstate International is not an accredited language school.
Certificates of completion are available upon request if you attend at least 80% of classes.

In‑person: Upstate International Center, 9 S. Memminger St., Greenville, SC
Online: Zoom links provided before classes begin

Parking

Empty lot at Pendleton & Memminger (UI has permission).
Street parking allowed — do not block driveways or mailboxes.
No parking in the UI Center driveways.

Weather & Holidays

Severe weather: UI follows Greenville County School District closings.
Holidays: No classes on federal holidays. Teachers may extend or reschedule to make up missed days.
