Whether you’re an expert salsa dancer or trying it out for the first time, you’ll have a great time dancing with the community. Calixto Oviedo, a Latin Grammy-nominated percussionist (La Rumba del Siglo, 2000), is a legendary figure in Afro-Cuban jazz and Timba music. Born in Havana, Cuba, he began playing music as a child and trained at Cuba’s top conservatories before launching a global career. Oviedo has performed with icons like Arturo Sandoval, Chucho Valdés, and Paquito D’Rivera, and was a founding member of Adalberto y Su Son and a key contributor to N.G. La Banda—pioneers of the Timba sound. He has played major jazz and salsa festivals worldwide and now teaches percussion at California State University, Los Angeles.
