Annually for 10 years, Upstate International Month has been launched at 12:00 pm on March 1. Upstate International encourages everyone to ring 100 bells at noon to announce the month-long celebration of our Upstate South Carolina international connections, heritage, and diversity.
Churches, communities, and other organizations are invited to join this tradition – ring 100 bells at noon on March 1st each year – and let your community know about Upstate International Month.
This tradition has connections with Greenville, SC’s Sister Cities International connection with Bergamo, Italy. where they ring 100 bells every night at 10 pm in a tradition that use to indicate the closing of the city gates.
Our photo is the Clemson Univesity Carillon, which annually joins the bell-ringing tradition. This academic year Clemson has enrolled 1,171 international students from 81 countries, and they want to celebrate everyone’s cultural diversity by playing 20+ national anthems on Clemson’s bell tower. A list of the anthems and performers can be found below.
