Carillon Recital by TAM, Tin-Shi | Clemson University

Join us for a captivating Carillon Recital by Tin-Shi Tam on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. This special program, A Celebration of Carillon Works by Women Composers, highlights a diverse selection of pieces by talented composers from around the world. From intricate Baroque-inspired works to contemporary compositions, the recital showcases the rich contributions of women to carillon music.

Renowned carillonneur Tin-Shi Tam, an internationally acclaimed performer and professor, will bring these works to life with her artistry and expertise. Don’t miss this unique musical experience celebrating the beauty and history of the carillon!

This event is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the recital from Bowman Field, or they can use the benches in the Carillon Garden across from Tillman Hall.

Bertha Tideman-Wijers was a Dutch composer who studied in Germany and lived in
Indonesia. She was awarded the Visser-Neerlandia Prize in 1959. Menuet (1956) is from
her Drie composities voor beiaard. Mary Jeanne van Appledorn was an American
composer and professor emerita at Texas Tech University. Suite for Carillon was the first
prize winner at the 1980 World Carillon Federation composition contest in Dijon, France.

Emma Lou Diemer was a professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Reflections from the Tower (1990) is an impressionistic work inspired by the view from

Storke Tower at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Hilary Tann was a Welsh-
born composer and professor emerita at Union College in Schenectady, New York. First

Watch (2002) was commissioned by the Friends of the Albany City Hall Carillon to
celebrate the Hudson River as a seaport. Heleen van der Weel is the city carillonneur of
The Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands. Inventie and Fughetta were published by
Nederlandse Klokkenspel Vereniging in 1978. Alice Gomez is a Latina composer from
San Antonio, Texas. Much of her music draws inspiration from Mexican culture. Coral
Bells (2024) is a commissioned work for The Music for Mayo Carillon Music Series. The
music reflects the pain of illness, and the hope found in the healing properties of the coral
bells plant. Amy Michelle Black studied composition with John Courter at Berea College
in Kentucky. Tree Modes (1995) consists of three character pieces, each representing a
white-flowering tree in different seasons. This work is the winning composition of the Iowa
State University Carillon Composition Competition.

A celebrated artist on carillon and organ, Tin-Shi Tam has given
recitals in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United
States. She was a featured carillon recitalist at the Festival
International de Carillon en Côte d’Or in France, the Rockefeller
Carillon Series at The University of Chicago, and the congresses of
The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA). In 2008,
Tam represented GCNA to perform at the World Carillon Federation Congress in
Groningen, the Netherlands. At present, she is the Cownie Professor of Music (university
carillonneur) and the chair of the keyboard division at Iowa State University.
