The Trump administration is trying to refocus its foreign policy on the threat from China. The so-called “pivot to the Pacific” requires a move away from Europe and a redistribution of military and economic resources to the Far East. Many questions arise from this refocusing on China. How strong is China militarily? Will it try to subdue Taiwan militarily and will the US come to its aid? Will other countries in the Pacific region choose to back China over the US? Can the US counter China both militarily and economically? To help us answer some of these questions and deepen our understanding of China’s approach to the world, we have invited Professor Susan Shirk (UC-San Diego), a China specialist, to deliver a 30-minute lecture, followed by a response panel and audience Q&A. Sergey Radchenko (Johns Hopkins), a Russia and China expert, and Kate Kaup (Furman), a China expert will round out the panel.
