A Beyond the Headlines Event

[Greenville, SC] – March 27, 2024 – Upstate International is pleased to announce that Tony Bartelme, a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, will be the distinguished speaker at the upcoming Beyond the Headlines Speaker Series event on April 10th, 2024, at the Kroc Center in downtown Greenville. In recent years it has become increasingly challenging to fight corruption in the age of “fake news” because of a decline in the number of local newspapers in the nation. How did this happen? How are corrupt officials now being exposed? How can we restore local journalism? This event seeks to answer these questions through a discussion of the Post and Courier’s “Uncovered” project.

Tony Bartelme is a senior projects reporter for The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina. Over the past 30 years, he has received the highest honors in journalism. His investigative work explores a diverse range of issues, including exposing government corruption. He has received the highest honors in journalism and is also the author and co-author of several books, his most recent being “A Surgeon in the Village: An American Doctor Teaches Brain Surgery in Africa.”
