[Washington, DC] —The World Affairs Council Upstate (WAC Upstate), a program of the Upstate International Center, was recognized at last nights World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) National Conference as this year’s recipient of the 2023 World Affairs Council of the Year award. Selected out of 90 councils across 40 states, this honor recognizes every person who has contributed to the innovative, meaningful programming that Upstate International and its WAC Upstate have used to deepen the region’s global perspective over the past 7+ years.
The World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) supports, strengthens, and represents a national network of more than 90 apolitical, nonpartisan organizations working to deepen their communities’ global perspective through speaker programs, discussion groups, and educational experiences.
The WACA National Board of Directors honors outstanding achievements of individual Councils and their leaders and members because of the organization’s reliance on cooperation and support among all its members. Special recognition awards are presented annually to the individual Council that has demonstrated superb programming, events, and growth over the preceding year.
Matthew Hughes, the President and CEO of World Affairs Councils of America announced “We are delighted to recognize the outstanding efforts and impact of the World Affairs Council Upstate with this award. Through thoughtful community engagement, innovative public programming, and inclusive conversations, the Council goes beyond the headlines and makes the world relevant to people of all ages and interests. We couldn’t be prouder of Tracie and her team.”
Tracie Frese, Executive Director of Upstate International and the World Affairs Council Upstate, accepted the award on behalf of the Upstate SC non-profit organization. “In a world traumatized by polarization and political bias, the World Affairs Councils of America make a safe place for education on critical global issues where individuals can be curious, ask questions, and formulate their own opinions. The Upstate International Center is grateful to the team of staff and volunteers that brought the World Affairs Council Upstate program to the point of achievement it received today. We are deeply honored to be named the 2023 World Affairs Council of the Year!”
